What is Contract Manufacturing?
In business, contract manufacturing is a technique where a particular company, let’s call it the mother company, acquires the service of another business to manufacture the parts that the mother company has planned to have which are to be added in the final product. An excellent illustration about contract manufacturing is in the electronics industry where most mother companies acquire services from different third party businesses that are known expert on specific parts that the mother company needs to complete the product. It is even a common scenario where a mother company acquires services from various electronics contract manufacturing businesses and the parts are only delivered to the mother company for assembly, branding, and packaging.
The utility of contract manufacturing by the mother company can cut down some of its costs since it does not need to invest on comprehensive trainings just to learn the technology needed to produce a specific part. For an instance, if the mother company sells computers by the bundle, it will be difficult for it to try to manufacture all the needed parts to complete the package such as the monitor, central processing unit, keyboard, mouse, etc. What the mother company can do is to hire separate services from say an LCD contract manufacturing company for the monitor and another electronic contract manufacturing company for the mouse and keyboard so that it can focus on the manufacture of the central processing unit.
With the presence of contract manufacturing companies, mother companies have a greater chance to explore different areas that are yet to be discovered. And because of this, technologies that are being manufactured get constantly updated to make all of our lives easy.
